The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

Peanuts_MovieThis was a very good week for movie trailers. So good, in fact, that this iteration of the column requires a lengthier intro. Even though three trailers earned the top spots, there are four others that deserve to be seen, too.

Noteworthy Newcomers

Maleficent blows its narrative wide open with its latest promo, hinting that the title character could have an antihero quality. We’ve also got a brand new international piece for Godzillaand even though much of the material comes from previous promos, this one does have elements that will enhance your perspective, adding to the thrill. The Boxtrolls got a new trailer as well, and even though the promotional campaign is still steering clear of story details, this one does delve a little deeper by revealing the Boxtroll lore. Last up for the noteworthy newcomers that couldn’t quite crack The Best Stuff is our first look at the Peanuts movie. The first part of this piece was screened at CinemaCon last year, but now, 20th Century Fox has added an interaction between Charlie Brown and Snoopy that’s both highly nostalgic and will absolutely warm your heart.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

The_Amazing_Spider-Man_2The new trailer for Dom Hemingway is both far from the best and far from the worst, but when a promo features Jude Law indulging in some sexy time with a stolen safe while in front of a crowd, it deserves to be seen. Watch Law going to the extreme in the most bizarre ways imaginable right here and then catch the pieces that fit the Best and Worst molds below.

The Best Stuff

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has arrived, and turns out it was well worth the wait. There’s a lot going on here which does suggest the film could suffer from villain overload à la Spider-Man 3, but in trailer form, getting the chance to see Rhino in action, catch Peter Parker and Harry Osborn’s big reunion, see glimpses of Oscorp turning into an “evil empire,” get a taste of the extent of Electro’s wrath and more just makes you more eager to see how it all goes down on May 2, 2014. (And if you’re as into this promo as I am,Total Film’s Trailer Breakdown with Marc Webb and the cast is a worthwhile watch.)

At Comic-Con: Electro Electrocutes and Spider-Man Himself Web-Slings into the ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Panel

The_Amazing_Spider-ManThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the most anticipated panels of San Diego Comic-Con 2013 and Sony knows it. Rather than kicking things off by bringing out the cast or even just rolling straight into some footage, the studio upped the suspense further by having the Hall H audience sit in darkness as a deep rumbling sound built, ultimately revealing a pair of wide screens alongside the side of the room and then unleashing a display of cross-screen web-slinging before showing off the Amazing Spider-Man 2 logo.

The Highlights

— The showmanship continued with a running gag involving the “real” Spider-Man attending the panel. After screening a video of Spider-Man climbing all over Comic-Con, the hero sauntered into Hall H, took a seat at the panel, and fielded a few questions. And it just so happens, his voice sounded very similar to that of Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield.

Watch Shailene Woodley Explain Why She’s No Longer in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Shalene_WoodleyJust about a month ago, word got out that Shailene Woodley would not appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane Watson, despite having shot scenes for the film. Apparently the movie was in need of some trimming so the filmmakers made the choice to cut out MJ’s brief appearance.

Considering The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature the characters from the first film and also introduce us to Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Paul Giamatti’s the Rhino, Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn and Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn and have a little something involving the Ravencroft Institute, a prison for supervillains, it does make sense that something had to go.
