The_GiverWelcome to the first installment of Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we cherry-pick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past few days.


1. The Giver

This new 60-second piece for The Giver doesn’t completely fix the issues in the first trailer, but it does manage to suggest the book-to-film adaptation still has a chance. The use of black-and-white footage isn’t particularly well woven into the material, but it is there and it’s effective thanks to sharper editing and an effective representation of the strikingly powerful and unnerving tone.

The Best — and Worst — Movie Promos of the Week

The-Hobbit-IMAX-Midnight-Poster“True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.” You can write that one down as one of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘s most memorable quotes, but the first clip from the highly anticipated December 14 release — as well as the latest behind-the-scenes postproduction video — were both trumped by four other pieces ofHobbit promotional material this week.

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey IMAX Midnight PostersEven as someone who isn’t a diehard Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fan, I still want one of these to hang on my wall — the Gollum one to be exact. But the best part about this quartet of posters is that they’re for some of the franchise’s most loyal followers, the ones with midnight IMAX tickets.
