Review: Don Jon

Don_Jon_PosterJoseph Gordon-Levitt’s highly stylized and well-executed directorial choices make “Don Jon” a raunchy romp, but then he throws in just enough of that good old JGL charm to give it some heart.

It makes sense that Jon (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) values his physique, his home, his car, his family, his church, his friends and his girls, but porn? When it comes to things Jon just can’t live without, porn is pretty high up there. And we’re not talking about the occasional indulgence. Not only does Jon have a habit of using pornography to get the job done dozens of times a week, but he also prefers it to the real thing. Considering he tends to stick to one-night stands, it’s never really been an issue, but when Jon meets Barbara (Scarlett Johansson) and thinks she might be worth a long-term relationship, the porn just has to go.

After putting a handful of short films on his resume, Gordon-Levitt made the move to features and, turns out, he was ready. “Don Jon” is out there to say the least and could easily have been an unfunny, pointless disaster, but Gordon-Levitt formulates the ideal unique style that well supports the comedy and surprisingly moving character journey.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

Don_JonVampire Academy will undoubtedly face an uphill battle courtesy of the Twilight Saga stigma, but the fact that its first teaser trailer makes it feel like a Mark Waters film does suggest it might be worth letting some more pretty teen vampires into your life. However, this promo doesn’t make the film a winner just yet, so three other movies snagged this week’s top honors.

The Best Stuff

1. Don Jon

It’s only one-minute long, but the new trailer for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon delivers the narrative basics, offers up some amusing scenarios, and rocks an infectious beat, ultimately doing exactly what any trailer should — whether it’s a one-minute tease or a three-minute promo — and that’s make the film look undeniably appealing.

The Best — and Worst — Movie Trailers of the Week

Don-JonThe new trailer for The Act of Killing shows off quotes like “audacious,” “explosive,” “chilling” and “extraordinary,” and while the trailer does manage to earn the acclaim and go as far to suggest the film really is one not to be missed, it’s also so unsettling it might make you think twice about jumping into the full feature. So although the trailer for The Act of Killing breaks boundaries and designates the film a worthy watch, three other trailers ride their more widespread thrill and appeal to the top.

The Best Stuff
1. Don Jon

Like Don Jon or not, there’s something charming about the scenario as presented in the first trailer for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut. Within seconds you know what Don Jon’s all about, making the introduction of Scarlett Johansson’s character all the more powerful. And even then, the narrative builds further, adding more heart and humor before culminating with an effective bookend.
