Review: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is a seven – on the “Twilight” scale. If you’re comparing it to films that play by the rules, it’s more of a four. But this is a “Twilight” film and after five of them it’s successfully established its own set of rules.

“Breaking Dawn – Part 2” kicks off just days after Bella’s baby bloodshed. Renesmee is already a rather large infant and Bella’s testing the waters of this whole life as a vampire thing. An indiscernible amount of time later, Renesmee turns into a 10-year-old (Mackenzie Foy) and Irina (Maggie Grace) spots Bella and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) enjoying some playtime vampire-style out in the woods. Horrified that Renesmee may be a vicious “immortal child,” Irina tattles to the Volturi. However, Renesmee isn’t immortal. She’s half human, half vampire. The trouble is, the Volturi are pretty stubborn and the only way the Cullens can save their newest family member is by amassing an army of vampires to defend her.

“Breaking Dawn – Part 2”opens with the best part of the movie, the opening credits. And I’m only being semi-sarcastic. The film’s title sequence is really quite mesmerizing. The text either bleeds from red to white or white to red, and plays over a string of vibrant frosty forest shots mixed with a few of a blood red hue. It works especially well, artfully bringing the viewer back into the world with a rousing hypnotic effect. But again, it’s the best part of the movie. Really.

Comic-Con 2012: Our Most Anticipated Events

The first rule of San Diego Comic-Con is that there’s absolutely no way to get to everything. The second rule of San Diego Comic-Con (or SDCC) is … try to get to everything. And we here at Movies.com will attempt to do just that, or at the very least bring back a taste of the big events everyone will be talking about come this time next week.

What are some of those events, and what should you expect from our coverage? Click through to find out what we’re looking forward to most as the country’s biggest geek-friendly convention prepares to infiltrate our nerdy hearts later this week.

Thursday 12:45 – 1:45 in Hall H

The non-Twihards might resent this, but what bigger way to open San Diego Comic-Con 2012 than with a panel for the final Twilight movie? The very first film to grace comic-con’s legendary Hall H will be the final installment of The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn – Part 2. This will (probably) be the last time Team Edward and Team Jacob supporters will get the chance to camp outside the San Diego Convention Center for a Twilight movie, so expect the crowd to be bigger than ever. Once the crowd files in and the panel actually begins, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and newcomer Mackenzie Foywill all be on hand, answering questions and previewing footage.

11:20 – Here we go! In comes the Cullen clan – Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone.

11:22 – First question is about the props that they’ve taken home from the set. Ashley took the Alice Cullen necklace.

Review: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1

After three immensely successful productions, why would Summit Entertainment change their formula now? Of course the studio wouldn’t, but you’d think bringing aboard an Oscar-winning director would almost naturally warrant some changes for the better, but sadly, Bill Condon’s prowess was entirely consumed by the drone of The Twilight Saga and he actually winds up delivering a piece that’s rather sub-par to two of the previous installments.

You are cordially invited to the wedding of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson). Yes, the time has finally come for Bella to put an end to that pesky love triangle and seal the deal with Edward, but, in true Twilight fashion, Jacob (Taylor Lautner) holds a grudge and brooding ensues. Regardless, after the I dos, the newlyweds wave goodbye to the friends and family we’ve met in the films over the years and hop a plane to Rio de Janeiro after which they board a boat to the secret island de Cullen. Forbidden vampire on human mating goes down, beds break and, shortly after, Bella grows a baby bump.

The problem is, this isn’t just any old baby. As Bella’s baby grows, it destroys her from inside. As Bella’s health deteriorates, the Cullens do whatever they can to prolong her life. Meanwhile, over at camp werewolf, the dogs are in an uproar over the bun in the oven. Pack leader Sam (Chaske Spencer) calls for the baby’s execution and, in turn, Bella’s, which, of course, Jacob will not stand for. With brother and sister duo Leah and Seth Clearwater (Julia Jones and Booboo Stewart) by his side, he separates from his pack to come to Bella’s rescue.

How To Dress Up as a Twilight Character

It ain’t easy dressing up as a movie character for Halloween. They’re either too tough to sell without being painfully obvious or not obvious enough. However with the franchise’s incredible following and Breaking Dawn – Part 1 right around the corner, not only are the Twilight characters rather simple to pull off, but then you can spice them up with the details to appease the hardcore fans. Like the series itself, going Twilight this Halloween could be an instant crowd-pleaser.

SDCC 2011: All Good Things Must Come To An End … With A Giveaway!

I can’t believe it, but this is officially it; my coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2011 has come to a close. For five incredibly long days, the experience went by in a flash. The action was non-stop from the moment I touched down in San Diego and while it was extremely exhausting and probably one of the most trying working experiences I’ve ever gone through, it was beyond worth it.

So, what’d you think? Did you like my coverage choices? Were the formats I chose to report in effective? Do let me know because I’m thrilled to say, it looks as though I’ll be returning to Comic Con next year!

I do know I learned quite a few things for myself while out west. First off, I need to pack more food than a box of granola bars, or at least make time to pick up some items at a local supermarket. Between running around collecting coverage and then writing it up, there’s little to no time to grab a bite. Second, if I want to cover a panel, I’ve either got to get on line at about 5am or hunt down a press pass. I arrived for The Walking Dead panel over three hours early and the line to get into Ballroom 20 was already about 10,000 people long!
