What to Watch in 2013 to Get Your ‘Hunger Games’ Fix While Waiting for ‘Catching Fire’

Dayo-OkeniyiIt may finally be the year of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but November 22 is still a ways away. As eager as we are for the big day to arrive, 2013 just started; there’s no need to rush the year away, as there’s a slew of films hitting theaters over the next 10 months that can appeal to the Hunger Games lover. Whether it’s another YA-book-to-film adaptation or a piece that features a Hunger Games star, 2013 is oozing with promising productions that should keep you thoroughly entertained through November.

The Spectacular Now, Sundance Film Festival
Perhaps this is more of a false start because The Spectacular Now has yet to secure distribution, but is still one to watch at the Sundance Film Festival. Based on Tim Tharp’s novel, the film tells the story of a whisky-guzzling cool kid with zero post-high school plans who strikes up a relationship with a girl who’s the exact opposite of him – socially defunct, but has ambition. Not only does the film rock a stellar cast including Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kyle Chandler, but it also marks Dayo Okeniyi’s first post-Hunger Games effort, too! Sundance runs from January 17 to January 27, so keep an eye out for reviews and perhaps even news of a distribution deal.

Comic-Con 2012: Our Most Anticipated Events

The first rule of San Diego Comic-Con is that there’s absolutely no way to get to everything. The second rule of San Diego Comic-Con (or SDCC) is … try to get to everything. And we here at Movies.com will attempt to do just that, or at the very least bring back a taste of the big events everyone will be talking about come this time next week.

What are some of those events, and what should you expect from our coverage? Click through to find out what we’re looking forward to most as the country’s biggest geek-friendly convention prepares to infiltrate our nerdy hearts later this week.

Thursday 12:45 – 1:45 in Hall H

The non-Twihards might resent this, but what bigger way to open San Diego Comic-Con 2012 than with a panel for the final Twilight movie? The very first film to grace comic-con’s legendary Hall H will be the final installment of The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn – Part 2. This will (probably) be the last time Team Edward and Team Jacob supporters will get the chance to camp outside the San Diego Convention Center for a Twilight movie, so expect the crowd to be bigger than ever. Once the crowd files in and the panel actually begins, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and newcomer Mackenzie Foywill all be on hand, answering questions and previewing footage.

SDCC 2012: First Trip To The Convention Center Floor

After catching The Art of “Frankenweenie,” I took advantage of the whole purpose of Preview Night, to get a lay of the land and figure out what to plan for over the next few days.

“The Walking Dead” will undeniably be a hotspot, rocking a statue of Michonne and one of her pets, letting you step in a pose as the other pet. The Summit/Lionsgate booth was already bustling, fans of “The Twilight Saga,” “The Hunger Games” and more lining up for free swag. The Sony section was particularly impressive, offering up looks at a vehicle from “Total Recall,” a costume from “After Earth,” and ship from “Elysium” amongst other items.

Check out some photos from my quick trip around the floor below and be sure to keep an eye out for many more in the coming days.
