Best/Worst Movie Promos of the Week: Time to Sing the Thunder Song with Ted

The summer season is upon us. The Avengers’ promotional campaign takes a huge leap forward, releasing its very first clip, a scene in which Scarlett Johansson takes on the bad guys with ease. Also in the summer realm is Total Recall. Now this is an interesting one as not only did we get a new full trailer for the film, but over at MTV, there’s a video in which director Len Wiseman explains why the trailer was assembled as such.

The August release, Sparkle, has got itself a new trailer and while it suggests the film will pack quite the performance from Jordan Sparks, all eyes will undoubtedly be on the late Whitney Huston. On the limited side, we’ve got To Rome with Love due out on June 22nd and while the trailer certainly shows that the film adheres to Woody Allen’s usual style, that style isn’t for everyone. Further down the line in July, the Step Up franchise will return with Step Up: Revolution. Per usual, the film’s new trailer is oozing with crazy cool dances, but also with lame performances and an unoriginal storyline.

If you’re looking for something for the here and now, check out these new trailers for two Tribeca contenders, Take This Waltz and The Giant Mechanical ManTake This Waltz has got Sarah Polley’s name written all over it, literally as she wrote and directed it, but also because this trailer’s drenched in authorial expressivity. As for The Giant Mechanical Man, get ready to see Chris Messina as you’ve never seen him before, as, well, a giant mechanical man. Top notch cast, quirky humor, original characters, this might be one to keep an eye on.
